Stonecast was approached by the City of Cape Town to develop a playscape installation for the planned upgrade of the Fisherman’s Lane precinct at Strandfontein Pavilion.

The project needed to meet some important requirements: It should be theme specific, must be reinforced against corrosion and suitable for the marine environment in which it would be placed and most importantly, be strong enough for children to play on it.

Stonecast came up with the concept of a nudibranch – those cute and colourful sea slugs – that could add colour to the upgrades at the pavilion and be a fun and sculptural playscape for young people to interact with.

The project allowed the team to experiment with ferrocement construction and colourful epoxy paints while making a giant rendition of Elizabeth’s Chromodoris (chromodoris elisabethina).

We hope that users of the play park at the upgraded Fisherman’s Lane precinct will enjoy the nudibranch for years to come.
